Big data

Big data is the process of analyzing very large, often independent, data sets to reveal patterns, trends, and associations – especially relating to human behavior and interactions.

Big data sets are complex data sets, especially from new sources. Traditional data processing software is insufficient to process them. Used correctly, big data creates prospects for business.

The '3 V's' of Big Data are Volume, Velocity and Variety. The volume of data you collect will vary- from Twitter feeds to user clicks. Velocity refers to the speed at which data is processed. Some processes occur in real time. Variety refers to the range of different data- from text, video to audio.

Data allows big technology companies to improve their products and the efficiency of their services. Big data is now more accessible as new technology makes cloud storage more effective.

However, large quantities of data alone will not support a business. Companies have to consider how they will process this data. Data analytics requires the work of highly-skilled analysts. They can provide intelligence on data.
